How to break the cycle of period poverty in the Global South by implementing sustainable solutions?

Marion Ravit

Résumé

Of the 1.8 billion people around the world who menstruate each month, one third experience period poverty. Period poverty, defined as lack of access to safe menstrual products, basic sanitation and menstrual hygiene education, remains a neglected public health issue. Particularly prevalent in lowand middle-income countries (LMICs), this issue exacerbates existing inequalities and hinders women's health, well-being, and empowerment. In addition, the environmental impact of menstrual hygiene management, particularly the significant waste generated by disposable menstrual products, underlines the urgency of finding sustainable solutions. In response, this project aims to break the cycle of period poverty by exploring sustainable interventions in LMICs. It highlights the need for comprehensive approaches that address environmental, economic, health and social factors. Using mixed methods research, including quantitative and qualitative analysis, and a participatory approach, a pilot study will be conducted in the Philippines to explore women's practices, preferences and challenges related to menstrual hygiene. By engaging with local stakeholders, including NGOs, associations and technical experts, the project aims to co-design and implement contextually appropriate interventions to improve menstrual health and well-being while minimizing environmental impacts.
