Is existence thinkable? Some aspects of the Schelling-Hegel debate

Résumé

The paper will focus on the anti-Hegelian polemic that Schelling conducted in the last part of his philosophical career. As is well known, Schelling accuses Hegel of being incapable of thinking about existence. I would like to show that Hegel and Schelling actually have very different conceptions of existence, the first as an exit from oneself and contact with otherness (and then it is necessary to distinguish between “real” existence and “concretely ideal” existence), the second as the factuality which is not as such analysable. These two conceptions give rise to two heritages that we must explore.
