Straits

Résumé

As part of the "Détroits" project, developed since 2021 in collaboration with Catherine Roche (Pr., member of the TVES laboratory) at the Université du Littoral Côte d'Opale, this colloquium aimed to cross the views of different disciplines to identify the dynamics of these major objects that are straits. These spaces take on a particular character in a context of growing affirmation of the maritime economy, human migration and ecological management of seas, oceans and coastlines. Participating in the resolution of environmental, logistical, sociological or historical legal issues is essential in these ambivalent areas of cooperation and conflict. Just as the Straits of Malacca and Gibraltar crystallized tensions between the Dutch, British, Spanish and French from the 16th to the 20th century, the war in Ukraine and tensions between China and the United States have resurfaced the strategic issues of these major passages (Turkish Straits, Kerch and Taiwan Straits). This interdisciplinary approach enables us to compare the straits in terms of their geography, economic practices and specific legal regimes inherited from colonial times and the Cold War.
