Tashi Rabgias, Intimate Witness and Chronicler of the History of Hemis and Chemrey Monasteries

Résumé

Being born in Sakti, Ladakh, Tashi Rabgias had natural connections with the nearby important ancient royal monastery of Chemrey. Furthermore, his father was an officer in the valley of Gya Miru, where the population is affiliated to Hemis Monastery, and he naturally developed a personal relationship with Hemis and the great Kyabgon Taktsang Rinpoche (1884-1940). It was thus Taktsang Rinpoche who gave Tashi Rabgias his name. Later on, Tashi Rabgias honored this connection in many ways throughout his life. While he shared several personal memories in his well-known book titled "History of Ladakh", other memories are found in a rare historical account he composed in 2008 at the request of the senior monks and members of Hemis Managing Committee. Titled “The Drukpa Kargyud School of Buddhism in Tibet and Hemis Monastery of Ladakh,” this is a typed document preserved at the library of Hemis Museum. I present this unpublished historical work and evoke Tashi Rabgias special connection with Taktsang Rinpoche, Hemis and Chemrey Monasteries from both these written accounts and from as series of oral interviews. I also bring up a few other noteworthy contributions he made for the presentation of Hemis and Chemrey's material and immaterial heritage.
