Looking at French Learning and Teaching in England Historically: Lessons Learnt and to Learn

Résumé

When we open the door of history, we hardly know where we are going to land. Why have we chosen to open this door? Was it a coincidence? What was this curiosity that has led us, after six years, to defend a thesis that is pedagogical, grammatical, and linguistic, but all placed on the historical stage? Did we write about history or pedagogy? Through this dynamic set of questions and tensions, we propose to reflect on the work we have carried out to suggest the reading of a fraction of the history of French learning and teaching in England, more specifically of its grammar, using a corpus of textbooks published between 1750 and 1880. The aim of our study, among other pedagogical questions, was to understand to what extent major historical events could have had an impact on the learning and teaching of grammar. At first, we thought that the important societal changes could have had tangible, perceptible impacts on the grammatical substance in the textbooks. In retrospect, before attaining the textbooks, events would affect the preceding social layers that seemed to protect them. We learnt that, among other objectives, the society’s top priorities were not micro pedagogical contexts, but wider and more global aspirations, especially at a time when England was a dominating nation on the world stage. Which place does the language, its status, occupy behind the historical curtain? Looking at these two simultaneous plays from the didactician’s seat has not only revealed barriers that the language establishes itself, but also the importance of exploring how the material constituting the history has been established. On the cover of a textbook there is a name, behind it a new history, a new lesson to learn.
