Hegel's Egyptian 'Musée Imaginaire'
Résumé
In this paper, I aim to demonstrate the necessity of investigating the corpus of Egyptian artifacts and representations known to or seen by Hegel to fully grasp the extent of his analysis of Egyptian art as a symbolische Kunstform, in his Lectures on the Philosophy of Art. The increasing knowledge and unprecedented visibility, as well as the decipherment of hieroglyphic writing at the beginning of the 19th century stand as pivotal factors shaping Hegel's perception of pharaonic art. By endeavoring to establish Hegel's level of knowledge and discern the specific historical conditions of his aesthetic experiences, my demonstration seeks to illuminate the significance of Hegel's examination of Egyptian art for both philosophy and art history.
