Levinas’ attempt to save subjectivity requires a reformulation of the notion of truth, with respect both to the classical sense of truth as correspondance between the thing and the intellect, and to Heidegger’s definition of truth as disclosure and manifestation. First of all, this work aims to clarify the reasons why these two understandings of truth are not sufficient, according to Levinas, in order to take subjectivity into account. Secondly, it further develops the notion of truth as expression, sincerity or bearing witness, with which Levinas uses to rethink subjectivity and the relation to the other. Finally, it seeks to assess the consequences of this new sense of truth for the notions of manifestation and correspondance, that Levinas subordinates to the truth as expression.
