Reconstructing the biographies of querns within Linearbandkeramik and Blicquy-Villeneuve-Saint-Germain households through technological and use-wear analysis

Caroline Hamon

Résumé

Within prehistoric studies, food processing organization is a powerful means to investigate economic differences and social structure. Within this framework, grinding activities appear to be particularly relevant for exploring daily life in domestic contexts since the Neolithic. The technological and use-wear analysis of Linearbandkeramik (LBK) and Blicquy-Villeneuve-Saint-Germain (BVSG) grinding tools offers major insights into the production and consumption structures of LBK and BVSG villagers through time and space. The detailed study of production sequences offers an opportunity to reconstruct the segmentation of the work, from the quarry to the workshop, outside and inside the village. Evidence of management stages, including reshaping and rejuvenation of grinding tools, highlights the constant interrelation of craftspeople and users in the domestic sphere throughout a grinding tool’s life. Use-wear analysis underlines the multifunctionality and complementarity of different grinding systems within the realm of food preparation, probably linked to varied recipes and food habits. By contrast, the lack of evidence for the processing of certain plants, as well as for stages in cereal preparation, raises the question of economic differences between households. Based on examples from different parts of the European LBK area, the exploration of grinding tool biographies offers an insight into the lives, practices, diversity, and identity of early farmers.
