The socio-economic preponderance of protestant merchants in eighteenth-century in La Rochelle
In a kingdom where religious cohabitation luctuated between tolerance and
repression in the eighteenth century, La Rochelle was an unusual harbour where
trade was dominated by a Protestant elite. Protestants formed the major part of the
rochelais merchant circle, controlling the place’s activity and shaping commercial
trends. Remarkably, the great merchants of the Reformed Religion managed to
control the economic institutions of their city, achieving this with the support of the
monarchy. This benevolence towards an economic elite that, in terms of public law,
was considered illegal was undoubtedly a result of their de facto socioeconomic
position. Furthermore, Protestants maintained in La Rochelle a real inluence on
intellectual questions as well as on issues of Christian religiosity and charity. They
penetrated almost all aspect of public life and remained the irst representatives of
local society, and the main urban elite.
