In this article, I quickly reconstruct the philosophical polemics of the interwar period in France, and note the loss of influence, and sometimes the outright disappearance, of certain theoretical options. I then go on to identify the impasses in which thoughts that seemed to have prevailed (e.g., philosophies of mind or of existence) have stumbled. Finally, I point out that, having prevailed in the intellectual field by breaking with the conditions that made the confronted problems intelligible, they cannot but have cut themselves off from the possibility of providing satisfactory solutions. In the third and final stage, I return to the rejected concepts, in particular those invented by Raymond Ruyer: sociologically defeated, they appear after the event to be philosophically decisive.
