Course Description:
This course provides a critical and practical examination of the digital landscape, focusing on web technologies. It aims to decrypt digital innovations from a sociological perspective, demystify coding practices, and foster digital exploration.
Course Objectives:
1. To explore digital phenomena from various angles.
2. To develop understand the sociotechnical innovation process and develop critical skills.
3. To analyse and decode digital aspects of contemporary life.
Course Structure:
The course materials, supplemented by online resources accessible through an online platform, will guide students through a multidisciplinary exploration of digital society, encompassing history, sociology, economy, political science, and the sociology of science and technology. Practical exercises will be integrated to reinforce learning.
Major Course Components:
1. Exploration: Investigating key issues in digital society.
2. Coding: Learning practical coding techniques and using digital tools.
3. Decoding: Analyzing and interpreting digital phenomena.
Course Outcome:
Students will conduct a "digital exploration," investigating a specific topic and presenting their findings digitally.
Course Philosophy:
Technology pervades modern life, yet its complexities often remain opaque. This course seeks to unravel these complexities and foster a deeper understanding of the economic, social, cultural, and political impacts of digital technology. By engaging in active learning and exploration, students will develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in navigating the digital realm.
Course Requirements:
- Participation in online coursework.
- Attendance at six in-person sessions for lectures and practical coding workshops.
- Collaboration in group digital analyses, culminating in the creation of a collective website.
