Case of predation of a juvenile European pond turtle Emys orbicularis by a Grey heron Ardea cinerea
Cas de prédation d'un juvénile de Cistude d'Europe Emys orbicularis par un Héron cendré Ardea cinerea
Résumé
Predation of the European pond turtle Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Chelonii: Emydidae)
by birds is not well documented. In the French department of Gers (32), the remains of a juvenile were
found in a Grey heron Ardea cinerea Linnaeus, 1758 regurgitated pellet. On the basis of growth streaks
and morphometric measurements, its age was estimated at one year. The freshness of the corpse and
the pierced plastron appear to be clear evidence of predation.
