The Political Complications of Revamping the Hammer Canon: The Vampire Lovers (Baker, 1970), Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde (Baker, 1971), Dracula A.D. 1972 (Gibson, 1972) and The Satanic Rites of Dracula (Gibson, 1973)

Résumé

David Roche examines the re- evaluation of the canon in the late Hammer productions (1970–1973) and shows how inserting Dracula in the 1970s London may have hampered the subversive potential of the famous vampire, while the Karnstein trilogy and Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde conversely make some of the underlying character- istics of the monstrous figures all the more explicit in the source opuses.
