This paper aims at studying the role foreigners played as “actors” and “smugglers” in the context of the revolutionary processes between Geneva and Grenoble in the late 18th century. By focusing on the case of the Natives—“peregrine” dwellers of the City of Calvin—we intend to show the essential part played by foreigners in the understanding of the close interlinking between the political and geopolitical phenomena characterising any revolution. Ultimately, we shall endeavour to explain how the Genevan revolutionary experience proved to be a matrix for the development of revolutionary ideas in the Dauphiné. In this regard, we shall explain how the French monarchy spy from the Dauphiné, Gaspard Bovier, became the “peddler” of democratic ideas in his own homeland. This will lead us to formulate the hypothesis of a “revolutionary mountain model” characterised by what we have called a mercantilist urban patriotism that could be likened to a form of social “girondinism”.
