Charge value dependence of micrometer-size particle’s movement above a standing wave conveyor

Résumé

Experimental study of the movement and transport of micrometer-sized dielectric particles using electrostatic conveyors is a difficult task, as it depends on several uncontrollable parameters that influence the particles movement, such as the individual particle’s charge. Due to the random nature of the acquired charge and the various parameters that could affect the charge value, such as particle surface condition, the state of the conveyor surface, and inter-particle collisions, the charge of the particles cannot be theoretically predicted or controlled with accuracy. As a result, there is a growing interest in simulation and modeling of particle movement in order to overcome some practical challenges while also improving conveyor performance. In this study, the impact of particle charge on their behavior above electrostatic standing wave conveyors (COS) is numerically investigated. The numerical model considers the combined effects of gravitational and electrical forces while varying the value of the charge up to 100% of the saturation charge. The simulation is performed on 60-μm-diameter particles, with voltage and frequency fixed at 1000 V and 100 Hz, respectively. The results indicate that changes in particle charge can significantly affect the trajectory, where particles take different paths for each specific value. At high values, particles can change the direction of their trajectories. The average velocity is affected by the charge value; the higher the charge, the higher the average velocity of the particle. Similar dependences are observed for the particle’s height and longitudinal displacement.
