Multi-criteria optimization of an industrial thermocline thermal energy storage

Résumé

Thermocline heat storage seems to be a promising alternative to two-tank storage, due to its relatively low cost and good performance. This contribution aims to optimise exergy efficiency, environmental footprint and Levelised Cost Of Energy (LCOE) of an existing industrial heat storage device (air/ceramic packed-bed ther- mocline system) by searching its optimal design. Three optimisation variables are considered: storage tank geometry, filler particle size and filler material. Three fillers materials are compared: machined ceramic (bauxite), recycled ceramics obtained from asbestos containing waste (cofalit) and natural stone (basalt). The exergy performance of the thermocline tank is computed using a validated dynamic model. The environmental footprint is determined by a life cycle assessment taking into account four environmental indicators: cumulative energy demand, global warming potential, abiotic depletion potential and particulate matter. Finally, a life cycle cost analysis is performed to determine the LCOE. The Matlab® multi-objective genetic algorithm is used to solve the three-criteria optimisation problem. A Pareto set is obtained for each filler material tested. Shannon entropy is combined with ”Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution” (TOPSIS) to select the best compromise solution of these Pareto fronts. Stocky tanks are preferred to maintain good exergy performance and low environmental footprint and LCOE. The comparison between the three filler materials shows that the exergy performance is not affected by the choice of the filler. Compared to machined ceramics, the use of natural rocks or ceramics from waste reduces the environmental footprint in the same amount. Despite this reduction, basalt does not have as good thermophysical properties as cofalit. Its tank volume increases and thus the investment costs. The LCOE is lower for cofalit than for bauxite and basalt. Applying TOPSIS combined with Shannon entropy leads to select cofalit as the best filler material.
