Challenges and lessons of sustainable local development and cohabitation in Corsican rural areas of low density and high foreign diversity

Résumé

Session "Immigrant entrepreneurship, international mobilities and sustainable local development in rural areas" ---------- The objective of this communication is to expose the scientific protocol, the theoretical framework and first results emanating from a postdoctoral research in geography, which relates to the challenges and the lessons of the local development and cohabitation in Corsican rural areas of low density and high foreign diversity. This analyse is thus interested in how mobilities, migrations and human diversity can contribute to the sustainability of these spaces. An interest is to propose for study Corsica, which presents its own peculiarities due among other things to its insularity, which offers a strong diversity of social and geographical configurations at the level of its territory (high and medium mountain, piedmont and plain, coastal areas, multifaceted countryside). Such variability has a differentiated impact on economic development, on landscapes, on sociabilities, on villages' life ; it attracts populations and therefore potentially eclectic inhabitants, and involves modalities of cohabitation and possibly dissimilar experiences, in particular for people with a migratory and / or a mobility history; but it also generates disparate representations of the figures of the migrant and the stranger. The results rely on a study based on complementary methodologies: statistical data to consider the similarities and differences of Corsican rural municipalities of low density and high foreign diversity; the production of Corsican territories' diagnostics for the municipalities surveyed according to a comparative approach; a broad economic and socio-demographic study of the chosen areas; at a micro level, it is completed and enriched by elements relating to observations in situ and by an analysis of representations, perceptions and practices resulting from the interviews carried out with the inhabitants on different themes: experiences of cohabitation, quality of life, well-being, sustainability and new modalities of politicization within these rural spaces.
