eHealth: Enabling technologies, opportunities and challenges

Résumé

Recently, the healthcare industry has undergone rapid transformation from the traditional hospital-based scheme to a patient-centered approach. Patients are demanding newer, more personalized, and accessible healthcare services matching the speed of modern life. Remote monitoring, teleconsultation, telesurgery, robotics for assisted living, to mention a few, are examples of new medical services that are becoming widespread thanks to the advancements in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) such as IoT wearables, cloud computing, reliable wireless networks, etc. However, these services produce massive amounts of data and need very strict QoS requirements related to latency, energy efficiency, data rates, mobility, positioning accuracy, security, privacy, etc. For the latency and energy efficiency requirements, Edge/Fog computing combined with AI/ML approaches are the answer to compensate the limitations of the cloud. For high data rates, mobility management, and positioning accuracy, the 5G mobile standard offer promising features to tackle the different use cases' needs. Security and privacy measures can be implemented in all the above-mentioned technologies. In this article, we review and describe the most relevant use cases in the healthcare industry. We identify the technical and QoS requirements of each use case. Then we survey recent works about the enabling technologies. Finally, we identify the challenges and open issues in the existing literature.
