Options for wind power in Vietnam by 2030

Résumé

Vietnam is experiencing a significant boom in renewable energy, particularly in wind power, which is set to expand with declining costs and abundant resources. By 2030, the country aims to install 12-15 GW of onshore and 10-12 GW of offshore wind capacity. Addressing the variability of wind energy will require a range of flexibility options including grid upgrades, operational practice adaptations, and energy storage innovations. Offshore wind presents a vast potential but necessitates early infrastructure planning to meet the ambitious target of 2 GW per year post-2025. The document underscores the urgency of revising Vietnam's Power Development Plan to accommodate an increased wind energy target and to ensure infrastructure readiness for the projected growth.
