Options for wind power in Vietnam by 2030
Abstract
Vietnam's wind energy sector is experiencing rapid growth, with potential for significant expansion by 2030. The declining costs of wind power and the country's abundant wind resources make it feasible to achieve 12-15 GW of onshore and 10-12 GW of offshore wind capacity within this timeframe. Addressing the variability of wind energy will necessitate the implementation of various flexibility options, including grid upgrades and energy storage solutions. Offshore wind, in particular, presents considerable potential but requires early and strategic infrastructure planning. The paper emphasizes the need for Vietnam to increase its wind energy targets and prioritize the flexibility of the electric system to accommodate the rising share of variable renewable energy sources.
