Translators, Entrepreneurs, or Both?
Résumé
This presentation tackles the challenges translation practitioners face in Cameroon regarding securing market access, enforcing business practices, and leveraging long-term outlooks in today’s globalised industry. Given the rapid advances in technology and, as a consequence, a pressing need to redefine roles in an AI-dominated era, we review what it takes to train “fit-for-market” translators. Would the focus be on translation, entrepreneurship, or both? Based on data collected through an online questionnaire with professional translators trained in Cameroon, we review business challenges, highlight training loopholes, and suggest innovative (yet overlooked) strategies to help graduates transition from mere content mediators into transpreneurs – business owners with value and impact.
