Advanced Lighting Functions using Road Projection
Résumé
This paper presents a research work conducted at ELS chair to provide further knowledge on new lighting functions using road projections, which are still under discussion in the automotive lighting community. Besides their attractiveness, such features need to be investigated in terms of safety benefit for better definition as long with relevant and harmonized regulation. More especially, such items must show universal understanding and high acceptance level by road users, regardless of the lighting technology. In this paper, we present the work which is currently conducted at ELS, in collaboration with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, about road projections aiming to indicate departing movement of a car in a parking lot. The design of experiments for future field tests is described, with purpose to evaluate whether the projected function is well recognized, understood, and acceptable by drivers and other participants (pedestrians, bicyclists) and whether these features can improve safety by further enhancing awareness regarding the intended departing movement. We also present here a study about the shape of the road projections: some shapes were designed to further enhancing awareness regarding the intended movement and the intuitiveness and understanding of the designed shapes were assessed on test subjects.
