The rehabilitation of Casa Galera
This study focuses on the history of Casa Galera, a prison in Madrid that is reserved for women offenders from the lowest social strata. My attention was first focused on its foundation in 1607, then on the evolution of jail conditions in the eighteenth century, in particular thanks to the philanthropic actions of the Damascus Junta. Finally, I show how the situation of the establishment was turned upside down by the Napoleonic invasion. The building was requisitioned to serve as a barracks for French soldiers. After the conflict, the jail will have to be rehabilitated and new funding will have to be found. On December 31, 1819, a new public jail for women opened its doors. La réhabilitation de la Casa Galera
Cette étude porte sur l’histoire de la Casa Galera, cet établissement pénitentiaire madrilène, réservé aux délinquantes des plus basses couches sociales. Mon attention s’est d’abord focalisée sur sa fondation en 1607, puis sur l’évolution des conditions de détention, au XVIIIe siècle, en particulier grâce aux actions philanthropiques de la Junta de Damas. Enfin, je montre comment la situation de l’établissement s’est vu bouleverser par l’invasion napoléonienne. L’édifice a été réquisitionné pour servir de caserne aux soldats français. Après le conflit, il faudra réhabiliter la prison et trouver de nouveaux financements. Le 31 décembre 1819, une nouvelle prison publique pour femmes ouvre ses portes. Les femmes délinquantes pourront à nouveau être condamnées à l’enfermement…
