Aviénius, Juba et les Maures. Une allusion à l’histoire contemporaine aux vers 275-283 de l’Ora maritima ?
Résumé
In this paper, the author argues that the description of Juba at lines 275-283 of Avienius’ Ora maritima may refer to contemporary events. In the 4th century CE, the ethnic label Mauri/Maurusii, applied to Juba by Avienius, was in fact used with reference to North-African populations that rose up suddenly and fiercely against the Romans, namely the Austuriani in the 60s and the followers of Firmus the Maurus in the 70s.
These events shed fresh light on the lines of the Ora maritima and they provide new evidence on the date of the poem.
