The sanctuary of the Temple à redans in Ai Khanum (Hellenistic Bactria): cults and ritual practices
Résumé
One of the main sanctuaries in the city of Ai Khanum was excavated between 1968 and 1973 under the di-
rection of Paul Bernard and its study is nearing completion. The purpose of this article is to describe how
the sanctuary was organized and the different rituals celebrated within its walls. The sanctuary comprised
several buildings standing around a courtyard, which formed the core of the sacred space. The lands extend-
ing on either side of the courtyard also belonged to its properties and were used for economic activities. At
least two deities were honoured by rituals that generally left few traces. They received votive offerings, but
also cereal -based food offerings, perhaps consumed during sacred banquets. Foundation and purification
rituals can also be highlighted.
