Prehistoric archaeology in nazi Germany the role of Quaternary geologists

Résumé

During the first half of the twentieth century, prehistoric archaeology in Germany to a large extent was undertaken by Quaternary geologists as part of their interest in changes in climate patterns and cave research. Between 1933 and 1945 funding for such scientific projects came to a considerable extent from the Ahnenerbe, essentially an SS institution with an ideologically tainted research agenda, which lead to a boost of prehistoric archaeology in terms of public interest. Young geologists at the beginning of their career found prestigious employment. SS membership was a prerequisite for working at the Ahnenerbe. The paper documents contemporary correspondence and cooperation between proponents of prehistoric archaeology at the Ahnenerbe and mainstream Quaternary geologists at universities and geological surveys.
