ARNALTE ET LUCENDA DE DIEGO DE SAN PEDRO : LES FORTUNES D'UN TEXTE ESPAGNOL EN ANGLETERRE
Résumé
Diego de San Pedro's sentimental novella, Tractado de amores de Arnalte y Lucenda, was first published in Burgos in 1491. Like other Spanish and French novels circulating throughout Europe in the 16th century, it enjoyed a certain success in England, where the genre was little practised by English writers. However, this novel stands out from the others for its rich publishing history: it was translated by various translators, parodied, and ended up being reused as a teaching text in a foreign language learning manual. Tracing its history will not only help us to better understand the general context of the translation and distribution of Spanish texts in England, but also to identify certain cultural elements that this text conveyed, and to see to what extent these elements may have been appreciated or, on the contrary, rejected by an English-speaking readership.
