Voix trafiquées au cinéma, un rappel aux normes ?

Plug-ins added to the audio mixer software make it possible to “reshape” the voice, according to the term chosen by Michel Chion, to transform the audio signal “to result in another sound” (Chion 2010: 149). An extension module, TRaX, developed by IRCAM and marketed along with the French company "Flux" allows extremely precise modification of the spectral envelope of the voice; among other possibilities it proposes to change the gender of the voice. What effects does this have on the links between gender and voice within cinematographic representation? We will see in this article, through the analysis of two case studies, how the passage from one genre to another, via a digital technical manipulation of the sound signal, sends us back to a binary representation that excludes the in-between, the exploration of a gap between two genders.
Des plug-ins ajoutés au logiciel de mixage sonore permettent de « remodeler » la voix selon le terme choisi par Michel Chion, de transformer le signal audio « pour aboutir à un autre son » (Chion 2010 : 149). Un module d’extension, TRaX, développé par l’IRCAM et commercialisé avec l’entreprise française « Flux » permet de modifier de manière extrêmement précise l’enveloppe spectrale de la voix ; il propose notamment de changer le genre de la voix. Quels effets cela a-t-il sur les liens entre genre et voix dans la représentation cinématographique ? Nous verrons dans cet article au travers de deux cas d’études comment le passage d’un genre à l’autre par le biais d’une manipulation technique numérique du signal sonore nous renvoie à une représentation binaire qui exclut l’entre-deux, l’interstice.
