"Don't fence me in": translating pluridentities
Résumé
This paper considers the sensation of being fenced-in by language, in particular the mother tongue, and with translation as a form of release from mother tongue tensions. It takes an interdisciplinary and creative approach to translation studies, drawing on psycholinguistics and creative writing research. We will begin by taking a broad overview of some of the ways in which language can be perceived as restrictive or confining, then turn to some literary examples of healing through translating, before focusing on creative translation classes in which techniques such as plurilingual writing, cut-ups and self-translation can enable plural and hybrid identities to emerge while paving the way for the individual voice.
