Flows in Liquid Metal Batteries

Résumé

A liquid metal battery is composed of three superimposed layers of fluids (light metal, molten salt, heavy alloy). This whole system is heated to a high temperature (T > 400 Celsius) and traversed by intense electric currents. One can imagine such devices on a large scale (a few meters) and one aims to manufacture them with materials that are abundant on earth, which would make this technology interesting for the massive storage of electrical energy. In this presentation, I will give you an overview of our studies on the flows produced in these batteries [1-6]. By combining multiphase numerical simulations (using the SFEMaNS code) with advanced theoretical modelling (linear and non-linear), we characterise in detail how the different layers of the battery move. Overly intense flows can cause the interfaces between the layers to displace and cause short circuits. At lower intensities, the flows can contribute to better mixing of the alloy, which increases the efficiency of the battery. 1. W. Herreman, C. Nore, L. Cappanera and J. L.
