While the conceptualization of “prehistory” undoubtedly represented a significant scientific advance when coined in the mid-XIXth century, it has since evolved into a substantial epistemological obstacle. Naively juxtaposed against the concept of history, it conceals a more profound distinction between the recent Paleolithic and the process of neolithization. However, gaining insight into such a distinction allows for the development of a different analytical approach. It also facilitates an understanding of the art that unfolded during each of these two periods, often simplistically labeled as “prehistoric” in terms of modes of existence in the world.
