Résumé

The programming of saccades is known to influence the perception of various visual features, such as size or numerosity. In the field of auditory perception, only one study (Hostetter et al., 2019) investigated the influence of one’s own movement on pitch perception. Participants' verbal estimation of tone frequency was biased in the direction of their movement : pitch was overestimated (underestimated) when walking upstairs (downstairs). However, these results could be explained by the mere activation of a spatial representation or by other verbal biases. To overcome these limitations, we measured the perceived pitch of pure tones in 10 participants using a psychophysical method (single stimuli). At the beginning of each trial, a central visual cue indicated the future location (top vs. bottom of the screen) of a saccade target. Immediately after this first cue, participants were presented with a tone of varying frequency that they were asked to judge. In a first experimental condition, they made a saccade to the target, whereas they maintained fixation on the center of the screen in a second condition. In this preliminary study, PSEs were significantly lower when the visual stimulus appeared at the top of the screen than at the bottom, regardless of whether a saccade was executed or not, i.e.,participants overestimated the pitch of tones associated with stimuli located in the upper visual field compared to tones associated with stimuli in the lower visual field. This suggests that the activation of a "pitch-space" association is sufficient to bias pitch perception, while movement per se is not necessary.
