Disease, death and the power of the written text in Henry Fielding's Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon (1755), powerpoint of the paper, 2023.
Résumé
This is the powerpoint of a paper given at the international symposium THE TRAVELLER'S BODY IN THE LITERATURE, CIVILIZATION AND ARTS OF THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD (12-13 October, Université de Pau et des pays de l'Adour). It deals with Fielding's travelogue, The Journal of a Voyage to Lisbon, which was published posthumously in 1755. Fielding's text presents itself as an informative work aimed at reforming maritime laws, the torments of Fielding's individual body echoing the dysfunctions of the social constitution. Yet the Journal also demonstrates the comic verve of the former novelist and his continued verbal and intellectual agility, in marked contrast to his physical disability: the Journal pays a moving tribute to the power of the written text, which can convert painful facts into literary pleasure.
