Note critiche su alcune presunte iconografie della dea Ašera

Paolo Merlo

Résumé

In the last two decades scholars made many attempts to discover representations of the goddess Ashera. This article deals with the five main iconographic motives that have been put forward as representations of Ashera: a) a stylized tree flanked by two ibexes (or gazelles); b) pottery plaque figurines of a naked, frontally-faced goddess nursing two babies; e) figures of a naked, frontally-facing goddess holding flowers (Qdsh-type); d) a naked goddess standing on a lion (or horse), called «Mistress of animals»; e) pottery clay figurines from Judah, called «pillar figurines». However, the criticai examination of these five attempts shows that none of them are cogent, either because they are grounded on incorrect interpretations of the ugaritic texts, or because they include circular reasoning, or finally because they are too hypothetical. In conclusion: the iconography of the goddess Ashera stili escapes us.
