Fabrication of higher thermal stability doped β-tricalcium phosphate bioceramics by robocasting

Résumé

β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP, β-Ca3(PO4)2) is one of the most attractive biomaterials for bone repair since it shows an excellent biological compatibility, osteoconductivity, and resorbability. Due to its interesting properties, it can be used to produce bone implants serving as temporary supports for bone regeneration. However, when heating, β-TCP presents a phase transition to α-TCP at 1150 °C which occurs with a large lattice expansion causing microcracks and reducing shrinkage during sintering. Consequently, the sintering temperature of β-TCP is limited. This phase transformation is a drawback for the density and the mechanical properties of final β-TCP pieces. A possible solution is to dope the TCP with additives able to increase the β thermal stability region like cationic ions that replace Ca2+ within the phosphate lattice. In this project, magnesium and strontium were chosen for their interesting properties. Indeed, these cations are well known to stabilize the β-TCP phase and for their biological properties. The goal of the present work is thus to dope the β-TCP with magnesium and strontium in order to increase the sintering temperature of β-TCP above the typical allotropic transformation temperature. The doped β-TCP powders are synthesized by the co-precipitation method where an ammonium phosphate solution is added into a calcium nitrate solution mixed with dopants. In order to study thermal stability and sinterability of the doped powders, the powders are slip casted and sintered by conventional and microwave sintering. In addition, adequate suspensions are prepared with optimized doped powders to manufacture porous scaffolds by robocasting. This additive manufacturing method is an ideal technique for constructing fine and dense ceramic structures with geometrically complex morphology. Indeed, robocasting has many advantages like low organic binder contents, multimaterial fabrication and the possibility to use a wide range of materials.
