La sucrerie d'Eppeville, un patrimoine picard exceptionnel en danger

Résumé

The production of beetroot and its processing into sugar are emblematic of agriculture in the north of France. The Eppeville sugar refinery was founded in 1857 by Bostenn et Cie, and became known as Bocquet et Cie in 1894. In the same year, it was transformed into the limited company Sucrerie d'Eppeville. Like most of the sugar factories in Santerre, it was blown up by the German army during the First World War. Built by the renowned architect Georges Lisch between 1919 and 1922, it illustrates the period of Reconstruction period, with a dual influence of Art Deco and regionalism. It was the largest and most modern in Europe.
