Corrosion of reinforced concrete: results obtained from accelerated tests and from natural environments

Résumé

Corrosion of rebar is the main cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures and, therefore, knowledge and prediction of their durability are a key issue. Generally, the study of the corrosion of reinforced concrete is carried out using accelerated tests per-formed in the laboratory where parametric studies are precisely chosen. However, a question remains: are the results obtained in the laboratory extrapolable or valid for reinforced concrete exposed under natural conditions of use? In order to answer this recurring question, this keynote will present the results of several experimental projects on the corrosion of reinforced concrete specimens taking into account climatic conditions, steel rebar type and exposure classes.
