Current Issues in the Psychology of Language: Language Production

Résumé

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an up-to-date overview of the psycholinguistic study of language production. It discusses basic mechanisms of speech production: focuses on grammatical processing, lexical access, and phonological processing. The book then considers cognitive theories and evidence from behavioral evidence, but ultimately, of course, language comes from the brain. It also focuses on neuroimaging data and discusses the electrophysiology of language production. The book discusses both classical and recent neurocognitive accounts about the self-monitoring of speech. It then discusses another control process, namely the control for selecting to-be-uttered words in the desired language in bilingual speakers. The book also reviews literature on written production. It discusses signed production and compares it to spoken production, and focuses on the gestures that typically accompany the speech.
