Urban Food Democracy
Résumé
This chapter aims to develop a nuanced understanding of ‘urban food democracy’. On a general semantic level, urban food democracy combines two specific articulations of democracy, each pointing to particular strands of discussion: On the one hand, democracy is thematised in relation to the specific subject area of food, bringing the concept of ‘food democracy’ into focus. On the other hand, democracy is addressed in relation to a specific spatial context, namely the urban space, thus activating the concept of ‘urban democracy’. Together, these concepts outline the general meaning of ‘urban food democracy’ in terms of a realisation of democratic norms in the field of food governance in urban spaces. The resulting concept of urban food democracy can be used to critically examine the democratic quality and potential of urban food governance.
