Rabelais, le cardinal de Richelieu et la bibliothèque de La Rochelle
Résumé
Rabelais, Cardinal Richelieu and La Rochelle’s library. This article focuses on a copy of the 1499 edition of the Souda, formerly the property of Rabelais and now preserved at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal. A new examination of this Greek instrument reveals additional provenance information: Cardinal Richelieu
and a missing link, Jean de Superville, one of king Henry IV’s royal physicians. The paper discusses biography of this little known Protestant physician who was part of a network including such key figures as Joseph Scaliger and Isaac Casaubon. It makes it also possible to identify a book from the lost Protestant library established in La Rochelle, confiscated after the siege of the city and become part of Cardinal’s own collection.
