A Carnapian Logic of Conceivability
Résumé
We argue that logics in the C family are good candidates for formalizing the logic of conceivability. In particular, the distinctive features of C logics are matched with important features of conceivability. If this modeling is correct, then Hume's maxim turns out not to be logically valid although it is valid in some classes of models reflecting non-trivial metaphysical assumptions. The upshot is that there are no purely logical reasons to accept Hume's maxim, only metaphysical ones.
