The Heart of Midlothian: reflexions on case literature and on the reception in France of Scott's novel
The Heart of Midlothian : réflexions sur la littérature de cas et réception française
Résumé
The Heart of Midlothian has been translated many times in France, under a wide variety of titles. Although Walter Scott is associated in France with the historical novel, was it the veracity of the plot that attracted the French public? Did the commentators take note of the mixture of private story, with the supposed infanticide and its consequences, and of history, with the Porteous riots of 1737? In fact, there is a huge discrepancy between the novelist's intentions, as expressed in The Heart of Midlothian, and the French reception, which has devoted many pages to praising the universality of the passions portrayed by the novelist.
