Anthropological perspectives on video game translation: from borrowing to linguistic rectification

Regards anthropologiques sur la traduction dans le domaine vidéoludique : de l’emprunt direct à la rectification linguistique

Résumé

The resurgence of borrowings, anglicisms and neologisms in the field of video games is far from being a new phenomenon in France, and is the subject of a growing number of studies, including in connection with the counterreactions that it arouses, in particular on the part of the Commission for the enrichment of the French language in France and the Quebec Office of the French language. This article aims to address this question from an anthropological angle while pursuing two objectives. Firstly, to analyze some postures of resistance related to the massive adoption of these borrowings in the form of normative recommendations, e.g. the study of the attempts and strategies of the translation and adaptation of this video game lexicon within the framework of the cultural history of translating practices in France, particularly in connection with French attempts at "linguistic rectification" in this area. Secondly, to collect qualitative data in the form of interviews carried out for the needs of this research (participant observation) with creators, players and commentators in order to identify their linguistic uses as well as the lexical alternatives they would be inclined to consider. This is to lead to an epistemological reflection on the place of anthropological theories and practices in translation studies (in relation to its socio-cultural dimensions), and an analysis based on a field survey of the potential specificity of video games as the theater of a massive adoption of English borrowings and neologisms, its causes, counterreactions, and its evolutions.
