Résumé

The company Ulrike Quade’s Antigone (2014) revisits the sophoclean tragedy by combining dance, theatre and puppetry and centres the performance literally and metaphorically on the female characters. The creators, Ulrike Quade and Nicole Beutler propose a rewriting that raises questions about free will, women’s heroism and power relations between individuals. In this subversive version of Antigone, dancers are the co-stars and puppets hold the parts of the three main characters: Polynices the fallen brother, Antigone the rebel, and Ismene the docile and reserved sister. However, Ulrike Quade’s Ismene does not stay in the shadow and does not hesitate to (re)claim her heroic status. Thus, the production suggests a new and without a doubt gendered perspective. Despite herself, Ismene has been labelled a coward not only by her own sister Antigone, but also (through time) by critics, creators and researchers resulting in her marginalisation. Considering this social discrimination in terms of intersectionality could Ismene’s claim also be, a feminist one or even indicative of a female empowerment that transcends the Sophoclean plot? In any case, the staging and dramaturgical devices proposed by the creators, the playwright’s revisited text, the fusion between manipulator and puppet and the fascinating physical vocabulary of their harmonious and balanced dance, strengthen Ismene’s voice who takes the floor to defend her vision of Antigone’s story and consolidate her place among the heroines of Antiquity.
