Gouverner l’Empire depuis la périphérie
Résumé
This paper aims at exploring, on the basis of the historical work of Cassius Dio, Tiberius
and Nero’s attempts (foreshadowed by Marcus Antonius’ sojourn in Egypt) to govern the
Empire out of the Urbs, and the policy implications of this transfer of authority from the
Center to the peripheric regions of the Roman world. Negative reactions by public opinion
and Cassius Dio himself to this unusual situation reflect a broad acceptance of the Rome-
centred monarchy introduced by Augustus. In this way, the historical account makes a close
connection between being lastingly far from Rome and losing credibility, political influence
or even mental balance.
