Goldilocks and the bar models
This article presents an activity for training primary school teachers. The activity responds to training needs linked to the recent introduction, particularly in primary schools, of bar models for solving arithmetic problems. Based on an extract from a children's book, it explores the potential of representing quantities using straight lines (or bars). It also looks at the norms for representing relationships between quantities with these lines in the additive field. Drawing on international didactic research literature and experience gained through training courses, the text questions certain choices made in introducing these models into institutional guidelines.
