Interoceptive awareness and yoga in eating disorders outpatients: a preliminary descriptive analysis.

Résumé

Introduction: Eating Disorders (ED), such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, affect about 10% of young people (Treasure, 2020). They are characterized by a deviant relationship with food and body, resulting in pathological eating and weight control behaviors. Physiological and psycho-cognitive comorbidities are commonly associated with ED, including interoceptive deficit (Demartini et al., 2021). Interoceptive awareness is the ability to identify, access, understand, and respond appropriately to the patterns of internal signals, such as digestive system, muscle tension, heart rate, etc. (Price & Hooven, 2018). Interoceptive awareness can be improved with mind and body practices like meditation or yoga (Demartini et al., 2021). To our knowledge, the effect of yoga on interoceptive awareness has not been studied in ED patients. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of yoga on interoceptive awareness in a clinical setting. We hypothesize that yoga will improve interoceptive awareness. Method: Participants who did or who did not participated in therapeutic yoga intervention proposed in the Paul-Brousse hospital outpatient settings completed the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) 8-weeks after their admission. Results: Currently, three participants have completed the protocol, 1 in the yoga group and 2 in the non-yoga group. A descriptive analysis showed that the total MAIA score improved after the 8 weeks in the yoga group, with a mean pre-yoga score of 37/160 (±21) and a mean post-yoga score of 68/160 (±39). The total MAIA score improved after the 8 weeks in the non-yoga group with a mean pre-yoga score of 70.5/160 (±42) and a mean post-yoga score of 77.5/160 (±46). Conclusion: The greater increase of the MAIA score in the yoga group compared to the non-yoga group should demonstrate a positive effect of yoga on interoceptive awareness. However, the sample size remains small and additional data are needed for a rigorous analysis.
