Gil Scot-Heron's Presidential Jeremiads
Résumé
Apart from countries under the thumb of authoritarian rulers, it is unusual to find poets and songwriters (or artists in general) paying much attention to the head of state. The United States, however, appears to be an exception. The talk will first attempt to substantiate this claim, then look into possible reasons for this striking interest in the American presidency among wordsmiths/ artists of the word. A case in point is provided by the work of Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011) who in his sung and/or spoken poetry commented profusely on the presidents of his day. Was it because he too had a program for the U.S.A.?
