From real and/or imaginary blanks to a critical quantification of human occupation
This introduction to the session “Gaps and blanks: a mirror of the archaeological practises or realities” of the Congrès Préhistorique de France Gaps and absences: identify and interpret blanks in archaeology aims to describe the general evolution of our way to perceive these lacks since the second world war, and particularly during the growth of preventative archaeology. The refinement of typochronology is still fundamental in this research; however, the absence of archaeological objects in the majority of features should be taken in account. The detection and identification of “unknown” features, and their absolute dating, is another important methodological
change. The systematic dating of these features, particularly through radiocarbon, but also more and more by OSL, reveals a totally different history and changes completely our perception of these blanks. Indirectly, dating by proximity, which is the most common, but never validated, archaeological practice, appears more and more ineffective. Without other supplementary arguments, this practice should be abandoned.
