Notes on the gold coinage of Aemilian
Résumé
The aim of this article is to establish a corpus of gold coinage for the Roman emperor Aemilian (AD 253). Most of the examples traced, materially or in antiquarian literature, are forgeries, which has promoted a study of ancient coin counterfeiting in the Renaissance. The provenance of known specimens has encouraged the study of important sixteenth to eighteenth century collections, as well as a reflection on the provenance of archaeological objects.
